Career Tips

Winding steps to a successful career? We suggest a short cut. Here are a few tips to take you higher up the corporate ladder - articles on stress management, managing change, workplace hassles and more.

Body Talk!

We all have our distinct body language, but very few of us emerge winners in that game. Body language maybe defined, as nonverbal cues that we give to others while communicating.

There are more number of negatives than positives. We have given a list of interpretations, which you must not adopt artificially, but recognise and avoid the negatives. If you are prone to make some of these mistakes, consciously remove them so that you don't fumble in the future.

NONVERBAL CLUES
=
INTERPRETATION
Brisk, erect walk = Confidence
Standing with hands on hips = Readiness, aggression
Sitting with legs crossed, foot kicking slightly = Boredom
Arms crossed on chest = Defensiveness
Walking with hands in pockets, shoulders hunched = Dejection
Hand to cheek = Evaluation, thinking
Touching, slightly rubbing nose = Rejection, doubt, lying
Rubbing the eye = Doubt, disbelief
Hands clasped behind back = Anger, frustration, apprehension
Locked ankles = Apprehension
Head resting in hand, eyes downcast = Boredom
Rubbing hands = Anticipation
Sitting with hands clasped behind head, legs crossed = Confidence, superiority
Open palm = Sincerity, openness, innocence
Pinching bridge of nose, eyes closed = Negative evaluation
Tapping or drumming fingers = Impatience
Steepling fingers = Authoritative
Patting/fondling hair = Lack of self-confidence; insecurity
Tilted head = Interest
Stroking chin = Trying to make a decision
Looking down, face turned away = Disbelief
Biting nails = Insecurity, nervousness
Pulling or tugging at ear = Indecision

Give importance to non-verbal communication as much as you do to verbal. Body talks and sending the wrong signals could hamper your chances of a good first impression.
