Being a large city Chennai has facilities for all types of medical treatment. Well known hospitals are Madras Medical Foundation, Apollo, Vijaya, KJ Hospital, Trinity, HM, and St. Isabellas. Traditional methods of treatment such as Unani, Siddha and Ayurveda are also popular in Chennai. Some more hopitals are Communicable Diseases Hospital, Dental Hospital , General Hospital , Institute of Child Health , Institute of Mental Health, Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women & Children, Kilpauk Medical College & Hospital , Institute of Thoracic Medicine, etc. There are many other good hospitals, too numerous to list here.
Compared to other metros, there is not much in the form of night life, say regular travellers. The favorite spot (all 8 kilometres of it) remains the Marina beach, with families making a picnic of it.
However with the newer business areas and software development parks in the southern suburbs, some changes are taking place. Restaurants serving exotic Italian, Mexican, Thai, Korean and Chinese cuisine have come up and while the main clientiele are widely travelled computer professionals and expats like Koreans and Japanese, desi Chennai residents too have started experimenting. This is a major change for tradition bound Chennai, really. Even Dhaabas serving mainly Punjabi and moghlai food have sprung up in the suburbs.
There are thousands of vegetarian restaurants in Chennai, ranging from the simple 'meals restaurants where a Thai lunch (rarely available in the evening) is served on a banana leaf for under Rs.20/- to sumptuous spreads for 10 times that amount in the major hotels. Breakfast at the simpler restaurants, which open shortly after dawn, consists of such staples as masala dosa, idli, curd and coffee. The Saravana Bhavan chain establishments serve excellent vegetarian food. Rajabhavan is a vegetarian restaurant at the entrance to the Hotel Imperial. A speciality of Chennai is the hot steaming lunch served on a fresh green banana leaf. Buharis Restaurant is reputed for tandoori cuisine.
Clubs: Well known clubs in Chennai include the Madras Gymkhana, Cosmopolitan Club, and the Presidency Club.
The corporate scene is the same as in other Indian cities, more efficient and a bit conservative perhaps. Living in Chennai is comfortable.
Teachers are always in demand in Chennai, with banking and secretarial vacancies always being advertised for. In recent times sales and telemarketing also have picked up. Professionals in infotech and other areas are also in great demand.
Law and Order: Chennai is a quiet sort of place. Recently, though, say residents, incidents of women being molested, and chain snatching have increased. Every ten years or so a semi lunatic resident of Chennai massacres people, but otherwise it is quiet. There were also a few incidents connected to the Sri Lanka problem but usually it is an internal quarrel and the public is not affected. Some new peculiar variants of caste quarrels are on the increase in the rural areas but so far haven't reached Chennai.
For elderly people Chennai is quite congenial. Overall, in spite of changes, Chennai is quite traditional compared to other metros. Apart from hundreds of temples inside the city, close by are several pilgrimage centers like Kanchipuram and Tirupati across the border in Andhra Pradesh. Chennai also boasts famous mosques like Thousand lights and Triplicane. Churches are numerous, like SanThome, Velankanni, Cathedral to name a few. Then there are various modern "ashrams" like the Theosophical Society at Adyar and many others.
