GETTING THERE

Air: Anna International airport and Kamarajar domestic airport are located at Meenambakkam, 20 km from Chennai. Taxis and buses are available. Taxi fare to the city is Rs 250.00, autorickshaw Rs 100 to 150, bus Rs 4 to Rs 6. Besides, there is a railway station just opposite the airport where you can catch a fast electric train to the city. The fare to Chennai stations ranges between Rs 4 to Rs 6.

Rail: Madras Central Station in the north of the city is the main terminus for long distance trains. Egmore is an important staion for suburban trains. Local transport bus, taxi, autorickshaw and suburban trains are available for passengers alighting from long distance trains.

Bus: The main inter state bus terminal is near Parry's Corner -High Court. Other large terminals are at Egmore and T Nagar.

GOING AROUND IN CHENNAI

Road: Chennai roads are broad and well kept. People generally use buses, suburban train, autorickshaws, cars and two wheelers. Commuting distances on an average are about 20 km. The bus system is said to be the most eficient in India. The fares range from Rs 2 to Rs 6. Taxis and autorickshaws run by the meter and fares are thus fixed by the government. The autorickshaw drivers need firm handling. Illustrative costs for fuel--petrol Rs 29 per litre: Diesel Rs 16 per liter.(rounded off). Repairing a car puncture costs about Rs 25 -30. Two wheeler puncture repair about Rs.20-25. Chennai traffic police are no different from traffic police anywhere else.

Suburban Railway: (Locally called electric train) The network is extensive, quite efficient and less crowded compared to Mumbai or Calcutta...

CLIMATE

Chennai has a humid maritime climate. The sea breezes change direction bringing relief. During very humid times Chennai is a pain. But evenings are usually pleasant.

Temperatures: Usually hover around 29-30 degrees celsius.

Rainfall: Chennai has two monsoons, southeast and northwest. Between July and September the all India monsoons rain down: again in October-December it rains a bit with a great deal of thunder and lightning.
