This is another popular destination for computer security and virus fighters. The Symantec Security Check is worth putting your PC through. A free tool, it neatly conducts a security and virus check on your system. Links to firewalls, content filtering, vulnerability management and web security services provide drop-down access to the relevant products available from the company. You will find the site very useful with a focus on small businesses and home computing as well.

Trend Micro
The site is an excellent place to check on the latest viruses. Register for HouseCall, its free tool. It reports on viruses found on your PC(if any), number of files infected and files cleansed by it. Check out its Virus Information Centre for the latest viruses and their risk ratings. Each virus has a page dedicated to it, with its aliases, description and solutions. The site also provides 30-day free trial for all its products.

Hoaxbuster
If you're interested in the virus hoaxes that are being propagated, visit the Hoaxbusters site. This venture is a combined effort of the US Department of Energy and the Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC). Here, you will find everything on hoaxes - how to detect them, how to react to one and a brief background on Internet hoaxes. At the end of it all, you might well be able to detect a hoax when you see one.

Sophos
A rather plain-looking site. But you will find all the information on Sophos's products, downloads and updates. It's available in 11 versions from Windows to Unix and Macintosh, on a 30-day evaluation basis. Latest viruses get the usual treatment - they are described, commented upon and detected by SAV versions.

This "Truth About Computer Viruses, Myths and Hoaxes" site is an excellent resource for the latest on hoaxes, chain mail, urban legends, and also a comprehensive set of resource categories. F-secure's checkered site showcases and sells wireless and enterprise solutions, besides carrying an entire section on security information. Its Anti-Virus toolkit for Palm OS is a first of sorts - provides on-device protection, with automatic updates and support. CERT is part of a programme at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute. A text-rich site on Internet security, it helps sites which have been attacked. Besides security alerts, it regularly brings out articles on networked computing security. Extensive detail is what you will find here. For instance, survivability research includes articles, reports, analyses and workshops on keeping work environments safe despite penetration and attacks.

Go to HackerWhacker, and get your PC checked for Internet Security glitches; gaps, small enough to see a hacker through. The service scans your system's over 1,30,000 possible port addresses. It also checks Windows' NetBIOS networking configuration. To start with, put your system through the trial scan. Additional scans cost about $10 each. Or opt for its Home Computer Membership at $30 for three months. Discount the sites's appearance, the service is very useful.

Anti-virus solutions for small businesses, home users and corporate clients. You might find the site a trifle cluttered but its products are proven. Kaspersky Anti-Virus's been rated "Software of the Year" by PC Magazine. Download it for free.
