A free tool, it neatly conducts a security and virus check on your system. Trend Micro
The site is an excellent place to check on the latest viruses. Register for HouseCall, its free tool. It reports on viruses found on your PC(if any), number of files infected and files cleansed by it. Check out its Virus Information Centre for the latest viruses and their risk ratings. Hoaxbuster
If you're interested in the virus hoaxes that are being propagated, visit the Hoaxbusters site. This venture is a combined effort of the US Department of Energy and the Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC). Here, you will find everything on hoaxes - how to detect them, how to react to one and a brief background on Internet hoaxes. At the end of it all, you might well be able to detect a hoax when you see one.

Sophos
A rather plain-looking site. But you will find all the information on Sophos's products, downloads and updates. It's available in 11 versions from Windows to Unix and Macintosh, on a 30-day evaluation basis. Go to HackerWhacker, and get your PC checked for Internet Security glitches; gaps, small enough to see a hacker through. The service scans your system's over 1,30,000 possible port addresses. Anti-virus solutions for small businesses, home users and corporate clients. You might find the site a trifle cluttered but its products are proven. Kaspersky Anti-Virus's been rated "Software of the Year" by PC Magazine. Download it for free.
