The Outsourcing Syndrome

The shift in business paradigms has led to an increase in worldwide revenue for outsourcing. Outsourcing now includes services like HR, finance, customer care, design, integration and web site development and maintenance.

As a part of today’s global economy, an Internet company in Hyderabad can just about maintain web applications of dotcoms with the server in Ireland. With outsourcing on a large scale made available by the Internet and other technologies, companies have a list of services, which they want to outsource. The nitty-gritty and the final choice however rests with the top management at large.

For instance the costs incurred in setting up the infrastructure needed to support an e-business can be highly expensive and impractical. To develop solutions in-house may mean hiring manpower that will be costly to retain and sustain. The best option would be to outsource such tasks so that other companies who specialise in the area and have the required technology and competency to power such project. Outsourcing helps companies concentrate on core competencies instead.

Outsourcing innovation in order to keep with the growth rate is what Cisco Systems took up in the early 90s. Cisco found out that it could not rely totally on its marketing or hiring strength to keep up the 100% growth rate. Today it partners with 30 vendors to provide hardware and manufacturing innovation.

Adapting the innovation to the internal operations is a problem that arises in outsourcing. Frequent tests to check for compatibility can help clear the hurdles, and repeated tests can minimise the occurrence of unexpected problems.

Survival in today’s world depends on companies being able to tap into the best talent made available by global leaders. Outsourcing is not just allying with state-of-the-art products or services; it is giving scope for continuous innovation and evolution of ideas to stay on the cutting edge!
