Flexibilty
encourages Productivity- II
This
week we continue our discussion on telecommunicating-
For
most HR managers, the benefits from switching more workers to
telecommunicating status have been a huge success. A study conducted
by International Telework Association and council-ITAC concludes
that workers have missed fewer days at work, it has been easier
for employers to retain workers and most employees work half
days instead of taking one day off under unavoidable circumstances.
Debra
L. Wentz, Executive Director, New Jersey Association of
Mental Health Agencies, Inc., Manasquan -
According
to Debra, Telecommuting has made their office much more efficient.
The software used enables her workers to log onto the network
from home or on the road. Their staff accountant has used this
opportunity to work on reports from home without being disturbed
by phone calls or visitors. Telecommuting has also helped their
computer technology support services division. They have 10
workstations and no particular computer expert. Debra relied
heavily on her sons expertise until he moved to college
1000 miles away. However, telecommunication has made it possible
for her son to work in the same way without leaving school.
On
the downside it takes away interpersonal interaction. The amount
of interaction that takes place within office space is much
more. Moreover it becomes tougher for an employer to determine
someones attitude or demeanor over the computer.
Mary
P Wylie, Executive Director, Associated Builders and Contractors,
Inc., Central Florida Chapter, Winter Park
For
Mary P Wylie, effective telecommuting works only when employees
are trustworthy and work well independently. For these individuals
it is possible to implement telecommuting whereby their personal
needs are met and both parties stand to gain. However, she feels
it is important to clearly define the individual's scope of
work at the outset. In addition deadlines and timeframes must
be made clear. If a task requires the individual's presence
in the office, he must be willing to come in as needed.
The
Information Age presents employers and employees with opportunities
to maximise talents, abilities, and contributions to work and
family as long as appropriate accountability measures are in
place to ensure that the work product is not jeopardized.
