In
the corporate sector where human resource is becoming like oxygen
to companies it is important to take care of them in every way
you can. This section will treat you with articles about time
tested companies and what they do to keep their employees happy.
May be you can benchmark with them...?
Real
training in virtual classrooms
Its
time to bid good-bye to classroom training and welcome Computer
Based Training(CBT). Training programmes till now have mostly
been conducted through the traditional format of an indoor session
that is very close to a classroom situation, with a teacher (training
instructor) showering words of wisdom on the students (trainees).
The blackboard (whiteboard here) completes the picture.
However,
how many employees of the company are going to be truly open to
donning the role of students? This is a question that has often
been over-looked. A classroom based training environment doesnt
fit itself comfortably into the corporate scenario. Primarily
because a corporate has adult employees and not children.
Adults
as students
Adults,
contrary to popular belief, make bad classroom-students. They
are likely to be less receptive to information when it is presented
in a, I-am-the-teacher-and-so-listen method. They
do not wish to be talked down to.
Providing
employee-training programmes through the computer is a viable
option for employers to consider. It could be done through CDs,
Intranet or the Internet. CBTs can be used for hard-skills (technical,
safety - related, manuals, etc.) as well as soft-skills (communication,
performance improvement, etc.).
Advantages
of CBT versus traditional classroom-training:
Individual Pace & Comfort - When an employee uses a
CBT it is done at his or her convenience (in terms of time available).
Each participant does not have to reschedule his/her work to suit
the training programme. A slow learner can take his/her time with
the learning.
Across Geographical Boundaries - Participants located
across the country/globe can be trained without the trouble of
a cumbersome travel to a common location.
Cost Effective - Costs of travel, accommodation, and document
replication (paper work) is reduced.
Reusability value - The prepared training programme can
be easily duplicated for all the participants (unlike Herculean
paper documents). The material can be easily reused for any number
of training sessions.
Updating - Like any other soft-copy, CBT too can be easily
updated. Saving costs and time on reprinting revised versions.
Feedback - Any CBT customarily has self-evaluation questions
at the end of each module (usually lasting 15 minutes). This helps
in giving feedback about the participants understanding
of the subject; thereby helping the participant as well as the
company.
Becoming
CBT savvy
Any break from the existing practices requires initiative, courage
and skill in implementation. There are a number of organisations
engaged in providing computer based learning systems. You would
have to provide your subject-matter-expert for the content resources
however.
Its
time to break out-of-the outdated classrooms and into virtual
classrooms to train your employees.
