In the corporate
sector where human resource is becoming like oxygen to companies
it is important to take care of them in every way you can. This
section will treat you with articles about time tested companies
and what they do to keep their employees happy. May be you can
benchmark with them...?
Flexibilty
encourages Productivity
The
topic of discussion in this issue revolves around flexible work
options for workers who commute long distances.
The
flexi-option makes it convenient for the employees to choose
their work hours and allowing them to arrive and depart early,
after rush hour or work only as long as it takes to complete
their assigned tasks. Some staff members are permitted to work
through lunch hour to be able to depart early.

Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, San Diego
Mary
Riemersma, CAE Executive Director, introduced flextime three
years ago. Original rules stated that all departments must be
brought under this policy. Supervisors had to approve the employee's
schedule in co-ordination with the official calendar. Some employees
opted to come in early and leave early. Others decided to slog
after-office hours so that they could have alternate weekends
off. Some worked four 10-hours and took Fridays off.

Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, Fairfax, Virginia
In
America, some of the larger cities like New York offer summer
hours from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. This means
working longer days Monday through Thursday and closing the
office at noon on Friday. However, according to Lucy Santiago
Executive Director, her staff indicated that this was not much
of a reward since they had already made it in to the city. To
overcome this problem they proposed two full Fridays off per
month, rotating the days among the staff. As a result the office
remains open five days a week until 5 p.m. Every summer, each
employee gets one or two three-day weekends off per month.
Flexi-option
benefits employees in more ways than one. According to Joan
Campbell, CAE Executive Vice President, Home Sewing Association,
New York City they are:
Attract, motivate, and enable employees to flourish, thrive,
and have fun.
Provides
a balance in their lives and allows them to be at home with
family whenever required.
Increase
efficiency
There
are fewer sick days.
Positive
effect on employee morale.
Employees
believe that the introduction of flexi-option has made them
more productive and the work gets down without little or no
interruption.
Next
week we will discuss telecommunicating and its positive and
negative effects.
