Q: Please tell me on what download speed of web pages depends on. Is it the browser, the connection, the modem or the RAM? I use both Caltiger and OnlySmart. I have noticed that with Caltiger the speed is between 31200-30000 kbps but with OnlySmart I get 48000-49200. I have also heard from one of my friends that switching my telephone/modem from tone dialling to pulse dialling reduces my telephone bill? Please suggest a good book for beginners to learn Windows 98.

A: Web download speed depends primarily on your telephone line (noise, exchange type), type of connection (dial-up, USDN, leased line) and the ISP's available bandwidth. Caltiger is free and has a certain amount of bandwidth throttling measures in place. This allows more users on the same bandwidth. In any case the kbps speeds you mention are pretty good; way better than what I can consistently achieve! Switching you phone from tone to pulse won't reduce your telephone bill. To learn Windows 98, try the IDG Books Dummies series.

Q: I have been using the Internet for a while. However, I am unable to dial any 6-digit number. This is creating problem for me as most ISP don't provides 7-digit numbers except Satyam. I am unable to use Caltiger. I contacted the operator of our telephone exchange, but he was unable to help.

A: The inability to dial 6-digit telephone numbers is caused by a software problem at the telephone exchange. However, besides Satyam, VSNL also offers 7-digit dial-in numbers (as per their site), viz. 3573001, 3573140, 3573344, 3573311, 3574004, 3590260, 3344222, 3342444, 3573362.

Q: I using Word 2000. Just 2 days after purchasing my new (assembled) PCI found neither Menu Bar nor any tool bar. Word 2000 only shows its full screen view. When I start a new file is open for use. But when it is saved or closed Word also exits me.

A: Your email doesn't mention if you tried any troubleshooting. In Full-screen mode, do you get an icon or toolbar? If you do, somebody has changed your View settings. If not its possible you have a macro virus that is slowly destroying your application. I suggest to visit www.antivirus.com and use its Housecall service to scan your computer for viruses.

Q: In my hard disk I found a C:\WINDOWS\JAVA folder. This has two subdirectories CLASS and PACKAGES. How can I benefit from those folders? Is the JAVA SDK included in the folders? If not, how can I get it?

A: The folder mentioned is that used by the Java Virtual Machine, bundled with IE. It is not an SDK. You can download this from java.sun.com.

Q: I have noticed when my system boots, it has 94% resources free. But as I use applications this drops to 84%. Please reply.

A: A drop of 10% is not critical. But if your PC slows down until it locks up for lack of resources, it is. Then you need a RAM defragmenter.

Q: Whenever I start my computer I get an indication which reads as follows, "POPEXAM.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42DLL6467." Kindly let me know how to fix this.

A: In Windows Explorer locate WIN.OLD (or .BAK) file. Next locate the WIN.INI file and rename it to WIN.FAU. Now Rename .OLD/BAK to .INI and reboot your computer. Things should return to normal.

Q: I accidentally hid a file on my desktop. How can I restore it? I tried looking for it in Find Files or Folders but to no avail. Please help.

A: Use Windows Explorer to open the Windows Desktop folder. From the toolbar select View|Folder Options and enable the check box against Show All files. This will show every file in the folder; including Windows system file. Right-click on your file's name and select Properties. Here uncheck the Hidden check box.

Q: I have a VSNL account and use Dial-up Networking to connect. But I get disconnected automatically after a few minutes or after verifying user name and password. I get "Dial up Networking was unable to complete the connection. Error 650:..." The VSNL Helpdesk could not help.

A: The error code mentioned points to a fault in the VSNL server. And could have been a transient problem. I also reccomend trying the VSNL Dialer. This can be downloaded from their Web site. Q: Which is the latest version of Internet Explorer? Where can I download it so that it is resume supported. I have got Download Accelerator.
Udit Saraff
via e-mail

A: IE 6 Preview is the latest build. Download Accelerator will only help get the setup file. The actual installation depends on your Windows configuration and downloads by itself from the Web. The IE6 setup file supports resume; although you may need to restart Windows.
