Willkommen
nach Deutschland!
If
there ever was a country which managed to make news and stay in the news
throughout history- it is Germany!
Land,
people
Rich and varied landscapes of mountains, winsome valleys forests and lakes-Germany
has it all. It is spread out over an area of 356,978 Sq km (137,828 square
miles) Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg,
Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland border the Federal Republic of Germany.
The islands off the northwest coastline are known for their health resorts.
The capital of Germany used to be Bonn till recently. Today Berlin has
again become the seat of power. The Rhine, the Black Forest and Mercedes
Benz are the three most recognised icons of Germany. It is significant
that Industry is representative of national character for the Germans
are industrious people!
Berlin
is the largest city in Germany and is the cultural and academic centre.
It has one of Europe's most respected universities, excellent theatres
and is famous for its vibrant and pulsating nightlife.
Languages
German or Deutsch as it's called, is the national language. English is
widely spoken and French is widely spoken in the west. There are many
regional variants of German that are quite different from the standard
form of German. Though knowing a bit of German will give you a distinct
advantage, you can make do with English. People in the industry, especially
in the software industry use English as a medium of communication with
non-Germans.
Religion
35% Protestant, 34 % Roman Catholic, 1.7% Muslim and the remaining are
unaffiliated or non-Christian denominations.
Ethnic
groups
German 91.5%, Turkish 2.4%, other 6.1% (made up largely of Serbo-Croatian,
Italian, Russian, Greek, Polish, Spanish). Foreigners comprise about 8.8%
of Germany's population.
System
of government
The Federal Republic of Germany is a democracy with a liberal free-market
economy, freedom of religion and freedom of the press. Germany is a member
of the European Union (EU).
Climate
Be prepared for warm summers and cold winters. You might find the climate
a bit harsh, but again it varies from region to region. Prolonged snowfall
is rare except in the mountains. Rain falls throughout the year (you'll
need waterproofing round the year) In winters, the average temperature
is between 1.5 degree C in the lowlands and -6 degree in the mountains
(Brrr...!) July is the warmest month of the year with temperatures between
18 degree C in low-lying areas and 20 degree C in the sheltered valleys
south. Warm Alpine winds called Föhn occur in Bavaria.
