A: Read the FirstFolio column in this supplement. And extend your self-learning a bit further, with the excellent, free books available at www.informit.com, a technical publisher's book beta site. Q:
I downloaded two software, Ram Turbo and Dr Salaman's Power Tools from
davecentral.com. Both software damaged certain system files in my computer,
mainly kernel32.dll as a result nothing is working at all. can you please
suggest me what actions could be taken against the firm or the web site.
i had to format my entire hard disk. A: First off, please avoid sending email in all capitals. This is like screaming in our faces. And wins you no friends. This is also the very LAST time we will answer such email. You can take no action against either product developer or the site. By installing the software you have assumed liability for the product as per the license agreement you have to OK before installing any software. Did you try to use a "crack" to enable the software beyond the trial period? It's possible you downloaded an infected file that caused your PC to crash. Q:
I am an avid reader of it@tt and find it very informative. I recently
came across "evernet" which is very soon going to take over
Internet and broadband connections. Can I know more about this technology A: Read more about it at http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2665205,00.html. Q:
I regularly read it@tt and find Mailbox really useful. Please tell me
about free software to increase one's typing speed and skill. Could you
also make a collection of the queries you answer every week and put it
on a web site from where we can access and download it? Maybe you could
group queries by category. This will make mailbox very useful for users
like me. We can also tell our friends who live in other cities and don't
have access to it@tt (in print). A: You seem to be reading our mind :) From the 5 Dec 2000 issue, it@tt is online at www.careermosaicindia.com/itattt. We did consider a group by category, FAQ-style approach. For the moment we are moving towards a generic answer model. Avoid downloading our answers from the Web as this constitutes copyright infringement. There are no free typing tutors. However, you could download Mavis Beacon and then go look for a crack (at your own risk). Q:
My previous mail sent on 18 Dec 2000 went unanswered. On Internet telephony
I tried several options like Net2phone, Mediaring, Dialpad but none was
successful. In net2phone firewall testing was failing.I contacted their
customer service and they said I should specify the TCP and UDP port numbers.
How is this possible? I contacted my ISP (Caltiger) but they declined
to help. Please advise me if it is possible to use net2phone. A: Under the existing telephony legislation it is illegal to use Internet telephony services in India. ISPs can lose their license if the Government of India finds they are permitting such services. For more details read our TechTalk on VoIP (it@tt, 20 Feb 2001) Q:
As a regular reader of your informative columns I thank you all. Can I
make a request? Please include in Sitescan or if not possible, let me
know more about Ayurvedic Preventive practices like "Panchakarma"
and " Sirodhara". A: We covered alternative medicine in it@tt, 9 Jan 2001. You could also use a Web search engine. Q: I am a regular reader and in fact eagerly wait for Tuesday. Lots of people write in with their problems, so it might not be possible to accommodate all the queries in print. But please help me. I have a Celeron with 32MB RAM. Until recently my machine had Win95 and PC-cillin. However, this failed to detect a word macro virus so I uninstalled PC-cillin and loaded Norton AV which successfully cleaned the virus. But Word documents which had been infected still show author name as OPEY.A and subject as "LOVE". Please suggest a remedy. I have upgraded
to Win98SE. I have noticed changes. Earlier while connecting through VSNL,
after the post dial-up terminal windows flashed the message "verifying
user name and password" within a few seconds I was connected. Now,
it takes almost a minute or sometimes even longer before the connection
is through. Another problem is that during shut down the message "it
is now safe.." no longer appears. A: We try and respond to all the email we receive. It just takes a while to sort through the virtual piles :) To resolve your Opeying problem, delete NORMAL.DOT. Next scan your PC to check if any virus traces remain and try and clean any infected Word files. I'm concerned about PC-cillin not detecting or trapping the virus. Have you been updating its signatures regularly? Upgrading to Win98SE is a bad idea if you have just 32 MB RAM. THe minimum is 64 MB. Your dial-up problems (and system speed) should be resolved with mire RAM. Win98 does pop up the message, but turns the power off as well. Q:
If any virus found in the floppy's boot sector what I should do? A: The first step is use an antivirus program to clean the floppy. If this doesn't work you may have to re-format the floppy using "format a: /u" to force a full, unrecoverable format. And make sure not to use the diskette until you can sanitise it. I am a housewife
who has completed a basic course in computers (MS Office, Word, etc) recently.
I want to continue. Can you suggest a course to do. My faculty is suggesting
programming in C+, C++, Java and VB or DTP. Please help me. You need to decide what you want to focus on: word processing, desktop publishing, or programming. For the first what you have done should be sufficient. For the second, your basic course will give you a solid foundation. As for programming, unless you plan to work full-time, there may be no assignments for you. G
