A: Thanks for the tip. We hope it resolves problems. This subject is hereby closed. Q:
it@tt has given me solutions to many of my computer problems.
I use Outlook Express (OE) as my email client. Many people at home access
the same computer. Is there any way I can password protect OE and its
Address Book? Is there also a way to stop other people accessing the Net
from my PC. I ask because many of my friends like to use the Net at my
cost and I can't stop them A: Perhaps you need to address the problem of friends misusing your Internet account. If a simple denial of access fails, consider not allowing such people into your home. As for other (family) members using your PC, that needs security which is poor in Windows 9x. Download and install Winlocker (101 kB, Win 9x, free. http://www.mjasystems.ic24.net/sw/winlocker3.zip). You can password protect your PC. Also if you upgrade from OE to Outlook 97/2000, you can protect the mail file and your address book. You should also remove the password from your Internet dialer. Q:
No CD is working on my computer. In My Computer there is no
icon of CD-ROM drive. Do I have to reload Windows? What about the different
softwares in my computer including one for accessing the Internet? A:If the drive is not visible in My Computer, try your hardware settings (right click My Computer on the desktop and choose Properties). Check the properties for CD drives. All you probably need to do is reinstall the CD driver or use the Windows default; usually Sony. You won't have to re-install anything else. Q:
I have done a BE(E) and would like to pursue my career in
software. I know Fortran, C, C++, Java, RMI, XML, SQL, HTML, Frontpage-2000,
Java Script, Vbscript, JDBC, Javabeans, Java Swing, servlets, and applets
as well as Windows NT 4 and 9x. How can I start? Do you have a site where
I can enrol myself to know my job prospects. What are my future prospects
with these qualifications. A: There is a difference between knowing about so many languages and software and actually having experience in all. Fortran is nearly dead. Form your email, we presume you have done a course in Web design. There is no site that will resolve your problems. You could register at www.careermosaicindia.com. Q:
I have a PIII with 128 MB running Win 98. I recently upgraded
my hard drive from 4GB to 20 GB. I didn't partition the new drive but
need to do so now. As I don't want my data to be erased what can I do. A: Whoops! You could purchase a copy of Partition Magic and use it to dynamically resize your partition and create additional drives. The software will remind you to backup your data before you repartition the drive. You could backup the really important stuff to an online drive like driveway.com and then run 'Magic. From experience there are few glitches, but its better safe than sorry. Q:
Whenever I switch on the PC it boots perfectly but when the
Desktop appears the first error is "DRIVER MEMORY ERROR" and
then "KAGOIC ANT_KRO$OF SAYS NOT TODAY." Whenever I press OK
the computer automatically shut downs. A: Your PC has been infected by the KAK virus. We recommend downloading this KAK buster (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.fix.html) Q:
I have Office 2000 installed. Whenever I want to change the
font in Word or Power point I am unable to do so. Times New Roman is the
only font available. This problem does not happens with other Office applications.
I have tried to reinstall Office several times but the problem remains
as it is. A: It is possible your copy of Office 2000 is damaged. Q:
I have a P166 MMX, 32MB RAM and Win 95. Recently while booting
I get "Windows was not properly shut down. One or more of your disk
drives may have errors on it. Press any key to run ScanDisk on these drives
.." But on pressing Enter, I then get "There was an error running
SCANDISK.EXE, or it was cancelled. Run ScanDisk for Windows, as you may
still have errors on your disk(s). Press any key to continue starting
Windows .." I am also unable to run Scandisk from within Windows.
I have NAV auto-protect enabled. I tried to run ScanDisk from Windows
after disabling NAV auto-protect, but the result is the same. A: Try booting your PC into Windows Safe Mode (keep the F8 key pressed during boot up to access the Boot Menu). Make sure that no applications, including NAV are running. Now run Scandisk. Q:
While viewing a video clip the following message was displayed
"This page requires a Plug-in for Video/vnd.vivo. Download from Microsoft.com
site." But at this site there was so many things for download that
I was confused. Also while surfing, every now and then a message box pops
in saying "Your current setting prohibits running ActiveX controls
on this page.As a result this page may display correctly." A:You won't get the Vivo plug-in at Microsoft. Instead go to the Vivo site and download it from www.vivo.com/products/playfree/vaplayer.html. The error message involving ActiveX control can be resolved by lowering your security settings. You can modify these at your own risk as some viruses use ActiveX to intrude into your PC. Q:
When I start my PC a dialog box shows up with the Backweb icon.
Details of the error are shown in computer language. It says either close
or contact your dealer. What does this backweb mean? How do I get rid
of it? A: We are unsure what is this "Backweb" you are referring to. You need to send us more details. Q:
I have a Celeron 433 with 32 MB RAM. I am using McAfee VirusScan
but cannot update it. When I open Vshield it shows an option Update. But
when I click it nothing seems to happen. How do I upgrade my software. A: You haven't mentioned which version of VirusScan you are using. Instead of using the Update option, why not instead visit http://download.mcafee.com/updates/dldat.asp and download and apply the update. Q:
I use Win98SE with 64 MB RAM and a 10 GB hard disk. I don't
know what exactly I did but somehow messed up the Windows swap file. Now
my computer refuses to boot in Windows. What should I do? Do I have to
reinstall Windows? What should be the optimum size for my swap file setting? A: Locate and delete WIN386.SWP usually located in the root folder. Then try and restart Windows. If it still refuses to run \Windows\Win then you need to reinstall the software. The ideal is double the installed RAM. Also set the PC's role to Network Server. This improves cache performance. If you have FAT32 enabled, then leave Win 98's cache settings well alone. Q:
I have a PIII with Win 98. Whenever I double click on any
.DAT file a dialogue box titled Registry editor appears. Previously this
did not happen. Please suggest a remedy, A: Avoid opening .DAT files. These contain critical system information and you may destroy the central Windows database. Windows Registry editor is used to locate information and modify this database. Even power users like I tread softly within the Registry. Q:
I have a Celeron 433 with 64 MB RAM running Win 98SE. I have
an Internet connection from both VSNL and Caltiger. I can't use Outlook
Express to send and receive email with either. Whenever I connect to the
Internet, the first website always stops after some time. Even after End
Tasking it, I can't open any web site. Please help. A: Have you defined your POP and SMTP servers for the two ISPs? I am unclear about your Web page problem. Does the page not open fully. Or does the browser hang? And is this behaviour common to connects with both ISPs. If its an IE-related problem you may have to reinstall Windows. Q:
Can I refill my ink cartridges of my printer? If so please
tell me the price of the refills. I have an Epson 460 ink jet printer. A: You can refill your printer's cartridges. However, this action usually voids your warranty and the manufacturer will be quick to blame you for any future problems. We are not aware of where in Calcutta you can purchase such refills. However, you could contact Amkette (33-2293766/4615) for a list of dealers. G
