Webby Awards 2001 - Fashion and Lifestyle

Over the next few weeks we will be covering a unique collection of sites; all nominees for the 2001 Webby Award. This week let's look at nominees for the Fashion and Lifestyle categories.

SoWear
Labeled as a "fashion collective" dedicated to promoting emerging talent in fashion. This site serves as a platform for designers, stylists, photographers, hair and makeup artists to meet and share resources. And comprises four main sections: the store, magazine, portfolios, and resources. It also features original editorials created by artists on the site. Products used in these editorials are available for purchase online in the SoWear store.

Hint Fashion Magazine
A second time nominee, this site is a lot like a glitzy fashion magazine (which was probably the intention). The home page is sleek looking with images that showcase featured designers. Links take you to pages which fill you in on the newest designs, shows, launches and gossip. Hint also has online portfolios of upcoming models plus streaming video footage of recent fashion shows.

Eluxury
Showcases and sells designer brands online. And currently features a virtual walk-through of the John Galliano collection. His designer wear is categorised into day wear, evening wear, sports wear, etc. An interesting feature is the "Shop In 3D" section. Here, with a mouse-click, you can rotate, zoom in/out or even animate products on sale.

Celine
This beautifully designed Flash-enabled site, is home to the Celine House of Fashion. Even if you don't ever intend to shop on this site, the fashion show sequence in Flash is a must-see. And while each shadowy figure morphs into a model, her clothes or accessories are displayed as larger images on both sides of the screen.

Erykah Badu
R&B diva Erykah Badu has been variously described as deeply spiritual, rhythmically banging, uplifting yet grounded, sensitive yet sensual. Her personal web site is one more expression of her multifaceted personality. Opening to a Flash-enabled montage, the site takes you through sections that tell you more about the diva, excerpts from her personal diary, news, and a unique fan quilt. This where her fans get to display their photos in a 'wall of fame' kind of format.

Kirna Zabete

The Knot
Another second time nominee, this is a complete online wedding planner. From budget planning to knowing your wedding vows, this site catalogues all you need. It even anticipates those that you wouldn't have thought of. Would you believe bubbles in the shape of wedding cakes, teddy bears and so on? And if you are still to plan a wedding, the site helpfully provides an entire section on how to pop the question! And since honeymoons are not far away, The Knot gives you the low-down on the where's and how's of that as well.

Epicurious
Last year's award winner, and second time nominee, this is truly a gourmet's delight. There are slide shows showing you how to shape the perfect hamburger patty to an etiquette guide that you'd do well to make your bible. Also on offer are restaurant reviews from eateries across Europe and America. There's an online shopping section for speciality foods and accessories for your culinary collection. The forum offers users the opportunity to find like-minded dilettantes or swap recipes and views.
