Windows : Writing with an Accent

You probably have conniptions when you need to properly accent words. I do. But we don't need to any longer. There's an easy way to add accents and other special characters to words like résumé or café. Use the Character Map (Win95: Start|Programs|Accessories; Win98: Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools in Win98). However if Character Map isn't installed, add it from Control Panel.

Then in the application (Word, WordPad, et al) in the drop-down list under Font, select the font used in the document. Next in Character Map, find the character you need, double-click to add it to the Characters To Copy field, then click Copy. Now return to your document, place the cursor where you want the character to appear and press Ctrl+V to paste.

Unplug or drown
In Windows 2K its safer to unplug a device before physically removing it. That because in this plug 'n play operating system, on startup the software will try to locate the missing device and then cause Registry damage. If you use PCMCIA, USB or 1394-based hardware you'll get an icon in the system tray with "Unplug or Eject Hardware." Double-click the icon to safely shut down a devices you want to remove.

Keywords Optimize Surfing
How many have you mistyped an Web URL? Or keep the backspace key pressed to delete the middle of the address. You can speed your browsing by first clicking the address bar so that the entire address is highlighted. Then type the address core "careermosaicindia" and hit CTL+ENTER. This will automatically add http://www. and .COM.

More Explorer
When you open Windows Explorer to manage files, the Details view (use the View Menu) is more satisfying. But right-clicking the column headings in the right pane of the Details view lets you hide columns or add new ones. After you right-click a column heading, click "More" at the end of the menu that appears and 25 new choices are revealed.

One of the handiest new columns is Accessed. This shows the last date that you used a file. As also if you saved any changes to it. If you did, then the Modified column display that information. Sorting files by Accessed is a good way to prune old files. Read http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q253/6/91.asp for the full details.

More Punch
If you use Windows 2K, you can put lots of commands into a single shortcut. The trick is in using ampersands (&) to separate commands on the same line: "net stop dns & net start dns" stops and re-starts the DNS. For more on this shortcut, use Start|Help|Index and scroll to "New features in Windows 2000." Select "Command differences" and click Display.
