WANT TO GROW AS A LEADER? GET A MENTOR

If you want to grow as a leader, get a mentor! There is nothing like being able to talk about your work with an experienced executive. Even a CEO can benefit from a “Mentor-mentee” relationship. Mentors help you see things in a way you might not have thought about. You stand to gain more experience as a leader, take better decisions and improve your skill-set. Take a look at Instill Corp. Starting from their CEO to all the managers, each of them have a mentor. Mind you, this is not just an ad-hoc process, rather part of a leadership development program.

At 36, Mark Tilling co-founder and CEO of Instill Corp., a B2B technology company for the food service industry gets all fired up when he talks to his mentor David Garrison, CEO of Verestar Communications and former head of Netcom. Tilling believes mentors help you put matters in focus. According to him they have “been there many times before, often under diverse and challenging circumstances.” Therefore talking to them helps you identify better ways to deal with situation and people.

There are no two ways about the fact that there is always value in a relationship between mentor and a “mentee”. Finding a mentor is not at all a difficult affair. Often mentorship develops between a junior and a senior level employee at the same company. However Instill asks their senior executive to choose a mentor they respect and admire from another company who is in the same functional area. Instill then approves of the chosen mentors. A confidentiality pact and a no-conflict agreement is signed. Executives are asked to meet with their mentors at least once every 3 months. In exchange, they are offered a small amount of stock in Instill.

Reports claim five out of nine executives benefited from this programme. Their managerial skills have improved to a vast extent. Much of the credit goes to the quality of mentoring. For instance Rocky Pimental, Senior Vice-President of WebTV Networks Inc., mentors Eric Ludwig, Instills Vice-President of finance and administration. There is Dan Dorosin, Instill s VP of corporate development is mentored by Paul Lego, president and CEO of Virage Inc.

The program has been a rousing success. No mentor approached by Instill executive has ever refused the opportunity to participate. You could argue that the stocks are a major luring factor. As Instill still has not gone public, it’s quite clear that financial rewards are not lucrative incentives.

The idea behind a successful mentorship development is to cultivate a good personal and professional chemistry. For instance Mohanbir Sawhney, professor of e-commerce and technology at Kellogs helped his mentee Andy Cohen, Instills VP marketing develop a marketing strategy using big shots as Jack Greenberg, chairman and CEO of Mcdonalds.

So if you want successful leaders in your organisation, Instill sets a fine example.
