Work Defined

Areas of work

As a journalist you have a variety of options available! You can choose to work either with the print or the electronic media as it is broadly defined.


Digests: These are designed to give summaries or abstracts of work, like those of research papers, novels, articles and so on.
Journals:
These impart detailed, technical or educational content and journals are profession concentric.
News Agencies and Bureaus: These places are also known as “clearing houses”. Everyday tons of information is received from different sources in different places. News agencies and Bureaus sort and send information and news to the relevant section of the press.
Newspapers: These consist of the daily morning paper, the tabloids (evening or special weekly papers) that carry all types of current news, comments and analysis of a wide-range of events.
Periodicals: These are published at fixed intervals. Magazines provide in-depth coverage of certain events that cater to a particular part of society.

Electronic Media

Broadcasting - deals with researching, investigating, organising, scripting, recording, editing and finally presenting work for the radio.
Visual Media - is a vast area that encompasses everything from scripting, recording and performing or information and visual footage for the following:

Television - this can also include via-satellite live coverage of any event
Video Magazine - where the printed material is represented audio-visually.

Remuneration

Pay scales will vary according to place, reputation of publication, experience, skill etc. These values exclude the amount given for travel expenses.

Most newspapers offer their journalists additional reading/paper allowance so that they can subscribe to other publications. This helps them remain up-to-date with the latest developments and events.

Designation Pay scales (per month)
Reporter Rs. 5,000 - Rs. 10,000
Senior Reporter/Chief Reporter Approx. Rs. 10,000 -15,000
Sub - Editor Rs. 15,000 and above
Assistant Editors/Chief Sub Editor Rs. 20,000 and above
Editor-in-Chief OR Chief Editor Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000 (with car and accommodation)
