Introduction to Journalism : How to write right!

Defining journalism has never been easy. Some have defined Journalism as a process – essentially a way of sifting through information for facts and then summarising those facts with words, pictures and sound. Journalism is a relationship between reporters and those who take in their stories. Journalism is a moral force in a free society. It is known as “the first rough draft of history”.

A journalist can work in these areas :

Print Media

Newspapers - These include broadsheets, morning dailies and tabloids. These carry various types of news, comments and analysis of current events.

News Agencies and Bureau - This is the place where news from different places are received and syndicated to other sections of the press.

Periodicals –These are publications that appear at regular intervals. These include :

a) Magazines – These are published on a wide range of subjects including lifestyle, business news, investors diary to children’s interest.
b) Journals - This term is used to specify publications of technical or educational content.
c) Digests

Personality traits required for most of the jobs in the electronic media include: the ability to work for undefined hours, a wide range of interests, general awareness, a pleasing personality, the ability to think fast and speed of action, a love for people, sensitivity to feel what the audience wants, tact, self-confidence, a sense of responsibility, creativity and the ability to take criticism positively. Working on tight schedules, travelling to remote areas to learn more about events and happenings, working odd hours is something that could be required of you. Skillfulness, accuracy and speed to make a good report could be an added asset.

A successful journalist is one who is interested in all fields. You need to have excellent writing skills - concise, accurate, engaging, lucid. Here are some traits that are imperative for a good journalist -
