Underwriter

Insurance underwriters review insurance applications and decide whether they should be accepted or rejected based on the degree of risks that would be involved in insuring the people or objects of concern. While determining the degree of risk involved, they consider such factors as age, occupation and the general health of people applying for health insurance, the age and driving history of people who are applying for automobile liability insurance, and the age and structural characteristics of property to be insured. They also research company records to determine the total amount of insurance coverage that is being extended on risks and losses due to disaster. Underwriters give and obtain information, explain policies, and quote rates to medical personnel, other insurance companies, or field representatives. They are required to use rate books, codebooks, tables, actuarial studies and other reference materials.
