Market

The sector has about 800 companies. This industry employs about 10,000 people and generates roughly US$500 million in revenue annually. That figure is expected to surpass US$2 billion by the end of the year 2001.

The highest contributors to this sector are pharmaceutical and human health industries which constitute about 60 percent of the total. Other important industries include industrial enzyme manufacture, bioinfomatics, and medical devices.

 

Most Indian companies are private and not engaged in basic R&D. Rather, they manufacture the products of others, through the development of unique manufacturing processes.

Biotech development is largely centered in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The hepatitis B vaccine was first manufactured in Andhra Pradesh. The western state of Maharashtra is the second largest biotech center, and its base continues to expand in states including Gujarat and Chandigarh.

There are a large number of research institutes in South India. In Hyderabad alone, there 40 facilities, 10 of them dedicated solely to biotech. States like AP, Karnataka have taken the initiative to introduce biotech policies. These are the states that are leading the development of biotechnology in India.
