Immigration
Candidates' admittance to the program is conditional upon the approval of their student pass. Candidates will require a valid passport for entry into Singapore. Upon arrival in Singapore, candidates will be given a Social Visit Pass valid for two weeks to one month. During this period, candidates must proceed to the Registrar's Office to complete the registration formalities and they will then be given a letter to apply for a Student Pass.

For nationals of countries that require an entry visa (such as P.R.China, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Myanmar), the University will be applying the entry visa and student pass on their behalf. Please note that students holding passports from Commonwealth countries (except India) and USA do not have to apply for a visa before leaving their countries.

Accommodation Assistance
A limited number of rooms are available for graduate students in the on-campus halls of residence. Students may also find accommodation in off-campus hostels. The Office of Student Affairs will provide assistance in locating suitable accommodation. All inquires about accommodation should be directed to:

Students Accompanied by Families
The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) provides assistance to international students in their application of their student's pass but does not provide sponsorship of any kind.

For students receiving the NUS Research Scholarship (i.e. research scholars) and are accompanied by family members, Registrar's Office (RO):
1) will sponsor the wife for a social visit pass which can be renewed;
2) will sponsor the husband but only a one-time sponsorship;
3) will not sponsor the children. However, a local sponsor (Singaporean or Singapore
    Permanent Resident)  will have to be located by the student for any children that
    will be staying in Singapore with the student.

Social visit passes for the student's spouse can range from 2 weeks to the duration of the student's course.

Medical Examination for Foreigners

To further strengthen the control of communicable diseases like HIV infection and Tuberculosis in Singapore, with effect from 1 March 2000, all foreigners who applied and obtained in-principle approval for the following:
1) employment passes for six months' duration of more;
2) long term immigration passes (refer to Professional Visit Passes, Dependent's
    Pass, Student's Pass and Long Term Social Visit Pass of six months' duration
    or more; and
3) permanent residence
will  have  to  undergo  a  medical  examination  conducted  by  a  Singapore
registered  doctor
.

The health examination includes the following:
1) a general physical medical examination;
2) a chest x-ray; and
3) a test for AIDS-causing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)


Issuance of the employment/immigration pass will be subject to the outcome of the medical report. Those who are found to have active Tuberculosis or HIV infection will not be granted the relevant pass, and as such, will have to return to their respective country at their own expense.
Procedures Involved
1. All applicants who have been granted in-principle approval will be given a copy of
    the Medical Report Form & Payment Receipt Form as follows:
    (a) For foreigners who require a visa to enter Singapore, the documents will be
         sent together with the in-principle approval;
    (b) For foreigners who do not need a visa to enter Singapore, they can collect the
         documents at the counter of the Registrar's Office.
2. After  completing  the  Payment  Receipt  Form,  you  should  proceed  to  make
    payment at the Cashier's Office located at the Bursar's Office, 1st floor, University
    Hall. The  cost  of  the  whole  health  examination is  S$43.26 (inclusive of
    Goods & Services Tax)
.
3. After  payment,  give  a  copy  of  the  receipt  to  Ms. Goh Bee Hwa  of  the
    Registrar's  Office
 (opposite  the  Cashier's  Office).  You  will  then be given an
    appointment to do the medical examination at the following place:

4. Please  bring  along  the  Medical  Report  Form  when  you  go  for  the  medical
    examination.  Your  report  and  X-ray  will  be  ready  for  collection  at  the
    Registrar's Office
10 days after the actual date of your medical examination.
5. Upon receipt of your medical report, please submit the following documents, in
    person, to the Singapore Immigration & Registration (next to Lavender MRT Station)
    for the issuance of your immigration pass:
    (a) the original copy of the in-principle approval letter;
    (b) the original copy of the completed medical report & laboratory report;
    (c) immigration letter from Registrar's Office; and
    (d) your NUS cash card/NETS card for payment of the visa and/or student pass
