The research will initially focus on the electronics and petrochemicals, because of the following reasons:

Many parts and components are manufactured in the Asia-Pacific region and shipped  to  electronics  plants  in  the  U.S.  and  Europe  for  manufacturing and assembly.
Major  multinationals  have  significant  manufacturing  facilities  in the region.
Examples are Compaq, Hewlett Packard, and Apple.
Electronics  and petrochemicals represent diverse products; one of high value requiring  discrete  manufacturing  while  the  other  requires  bulk processing. Electronics move mostly by air while petrochemicals move by sea and pipeline transportation.
Research in these two extremes would facilitate investigating other supply chain sectors.
As a first step, attention will be on the development of a series of white papers in these areas  to  document the available body of knowledge and also industry needs for future logistics research.
