About TLI-AP Study Awards

What is the study award?

The aim of the TLI-AP Study Awards is to support developing Singapore into the logistics hub in Asia and to nurture logistics excellence in support of Singapore's economic activities. On completion of this program, TLI-AP Study Award recipients will have the opportunity to embark on a rewarding career with sponsored companies based in Singapore.

Who are the sponsors?
The sponsors are National Science & Technology Board (NSTB), the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore and sponsoring companies. The sponsoring companies are well established multi-national and local corporations based in Singapore.
In 2001/2002 intake, the following companies were our sponsors: Bax Global, CWT, Ryder-Ascent, TNT, Katoen Natie SembCorp, UPS, Danzas, IBM, Honeywell, Fritz Logistics, NOL/APL, YCH, EXEL, Avnet, SembCorp Logistics and Schenker.

Who are the sponsors for AY2002/2003?
We are currently working on the list of sponsors. However, we do not publicize the list of sponsors.

Who administers the TLI-AP Study Awards?
TLI-AP administers the awards.

Who can apply?

The Study Award is open to Singapore citizens, permanent residents and foreign students. EDB will assist to identify co-sponsoring companies in Singapore for students who are accepted into the TLI-AP Dual MSc in Logistics course.

How does one apply?
There is no separate form for applying to the Study Awards. You simply indicate your choice in Part M of the application form. If you chose not to apply for the Study Award, we will consider you as a self-financing student.

Why are companies offering study awards to students?
Companies are offering the study awards to students with the intention of employing them for the long term upon graduation and grooming those with potential and good performance for key positions. After graduation, award recipients will be employed in positions within the companies where their skills are required. They will receive market-equivalent pay and will enjoy the same benefits as other employees within the companies. With good performance, their career prospects will be good, if not better, than other employees.

What does the Award cover?
The Award will cover the tuition fees plus various allowances for the whole duration of the program. These are stipend (in Singapore & Atlanta, USA); travel to and from Atlanta, tuition fees (for study in GT & NUS); miscellaneous allowances: warm clothing & book allowance. Total amount is equivalent to about $52,000/-. Please take not that this amount of $52,000 includes a portion of overhead charges, which NUS will pay to GT directly on behalf of the students.

Please note that NUS reserves to itself the right from time to time (even after the award deed has been executed) to make such variation or variations to the quantum of the award as the University may deem fit.

Is there a bond to the award?
Yes, successful applicants for the award will have a contractual obligation (bond) to work for 3 years with the sponsoring companies in Singapore. However, some companies do reserve to themselves the right to discharge themselves from the bond, or the right not to employ their sponsored students upon their graduation.

Can students choose the companies they want to receive the awards from?

Yes, provided they receive multiple offers of awards from the sponsoring companies through TLI-AP.

Must students accept awards when offered?
Students have the option of not taking up the study award. However, since the offer comes with the award, students' refusal to accept the award may result in their offer being re-evaluated.

What are the selection criteria and the award recipient selection process?
Applicants of study awards must have outstanding academic records, satisfy the admission criteria (GT and NUS admission criteria) and recruitment criteria (the sponsoring company agrees to employ student upon graduation).

After satisfying both NUS & GT admission requirements, details of applicants will be sent to potential company sponsors for consideration. This process is similar to company's recruitment process where the applicant's qualifications, background, experience, skills, language ability etc are examined. An interview may be arranged.

Will there be any penalty for breaking the bond?

Yes, there will be a monetary penalty. TLI-AP will recover from the student, who quits during the study period, the total funds paid to him/her and on his/her behalf. If he/she quits while serving the bond with the sponsoring company, TLI-AP and the sponsoring company will recover from the student a pro-rated amount.

Students will take four courses in NUS during the first semester. They can opt to do a 5th module from a list of modules to be compiled at the beginning of the first semester. At GT, they will do 6 courses. A logistics related research project in Singapore will be done during the final semester.

When will I go over to GT?
You will join the spring intake in January 2003 (if visa is approved by the US Embassy).

When will I return to Singapore after semester 2?
You will return to Singapore in mid-May 2003.

Admission

Are part-time students eligible?
At present, this program will only be run as a MSc for full time students, to be completed in 3 semesters (1.5 years), though many of the courses conducted in NUS will be in the evenings. The maximum period of candidature is 5 semesters.

You are advised to apply for the next intake.

Can a student in another program in another University switch over to the Dual Degree Master Program? If so, is there any waiver or exemption? Are course credits transferrable?

No. Course credit is only transferable if students have completed the modules/courses in NUS or GT and these completed modules are listed as part of course curriculum in the Dual Degree MSc program. Students must apply for waiver/exemption.

How much weightage is given to working experience in the logistics industry?
We will consider the working experience in the logistics industry. More importantly, however, is a good academic background which will be very helpful in successful completion of this program.

Can one be exempted from taking the GRE or TOEFL test?
No. The scores must be submitted for application to be considered.

Is TOEFL still required if the student had already obtained a degree from an overseas university in US and Canada?
TOEFL is not required.

What is the expected benchmark score required for GRE and TOEFL?
GRE > 2000,  TOEFL > 550(paper-based),  213 (computer-based)
For GRE, applicants should take the General Test.

Where should I instruct ETS to send the TOEFL and GRE scores to?
Ask ETS to send your TOEFL and GRE scores to National University of Singapore. Do not ask ETS to send to GT. In your application form, enclose photocopies of GRE and  TOEFL score sheets. Alternatively, you may also submit the original copies which ETS gives you. Please note that the original score sheets of TOEFL and GRE once submitted will not be returned.

What is NUS Institutional / Departmental Code?
Please use 0677 for Institutional Code for National University of Singapore and 99 for departmental code (Others).

Will someone without a first degree but with vast experience in the logistics industry
be considered?

The logistics program we have with Georgia Tech is a combination of the strong existing MSc program at GT together with courses at NUS and a research project. The program is mainly analytical and does place reliance on candidates having a sufficient technical background to be able to handle the material in the courses. While working experience would clearly be valuable in some portions of the program, it will be insufficient for a major part of the coursework.

Visa Application

How do I apply for a visa to Singapore?

For nationals of countries whom require an entry visa (such as P.R. China, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Myanmar), we will be applying for the entry visa on your behalf. We will send you the visa approval letter after we have received it from Singapore Immigration. Singapore Immigration will take about four weeks to process the application. In the meantime, you should apply for your passport. Please note that your admittance to the programme is conditioned upon the Singapore Immigration approving your application for a entry visa.

What do I do with the entry visa I received?

Upon your arrival in Singapore, present the original approval letter (which serves as both an entry visa and an in-principal student pass approval) to the Duty Officer at the airport Immigration Checkpoint. The Duty Officer will issue you with a Special Pass, normally valid for 2 weeks. During this period, you are required to complete your registration procedures at the NUS Registrar's Office. After registration, you will be given a letter certifying your student status, which you have to submit to the Singapore Immigration Office to apply for Student Pass. Please note that your admittance to the programme is conditioned upon the Singapore Immigration approving your application for a student pass. Issuance of the student pass will be subject to the outcome of your medical examination. Those who are found to have active Tuberculosis or HIV infection will not be granted the relevant pass, and as such, will have to return to their home countries at their own expenses.

What type of visa do I apply for US?

GT and NUS will arrange for you to apply for J-1 visa. IAP66 will be issued by GT in support of your visa application. Please note that whether you will be able to study in US is dependable on the success of your visa application.

Can I get to US with other kind of visa (e.g. F1)?

No.

Where can I get more information on travel to US?

Please visit their site at http://travel.state.gov/.
