CLIMATE
The
climate of the USA is different in each state, though most of
the United States has a continental climate characterized by considerable
annual variability; coastal regions, moderated by the oceans,
have less variable climates. Hawaii has slight variability. Alaska
is partly cold-wet and partly cold-dry. The Eastern US is humid
(annual rainfall - 20"). The Western US except for the mountain
and the maritime Pacific coast is mostly semi-arid (annual rainfall
- 10 & 20"), though parts are arid (annual rainfall less than
10").
The
Western mountains (annual rainfall - 20"). The North Western coast
(annual rainfall - 100"). Along the Pacific coast rainfall occurs
mostly during the winter. In the Central US it is greatest during
the summer growing season. Rainfall in the Eastern States is rather
even throughout the year.
The
country's temperatures are varied. Winters in North US are long
and cold. Temperatures are influenced by the proximity to oceans.
North East - New York average annual temperature is 55 deg F (12.77
deg C).
South - Charleston, S.C., average annual temperature is 66 deg
F (18.89 deg C).
Southern Florida - Miami average annual temperature is 75 deg
F (23.88 deg C).
The Central US - Minneapolis, Minn., the average annual temperature
is 45 deg F (7.22 deg C).
The West coast - Portland, Oreg., the average annual temperature
is 54 deg F(12.22 deg C).
Los Angeles - the average annual temperature is 63 deg F (17.22
deg C).

Climatic
hazards in the US include hurricanes along the Gulf and the Atlantic
coasts. Tornadoes in the South East and Central States. Hail on
the Western plains. Dry electric storms that cause forest fires
on the Western mountains. Floods in the Central and the Eastern
States and along the Pacific coasts in winter. Droughts in most
of the Western States.
