RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION

The newer firms are found in areas like Airport road, M.G.Road, Cunningham Road, Infantry Road, Hosur Road, Whitefield and the Electronic city.

So it makes sense to live relatively closeby and avoid rush hour traffic jams (what a hope, say residents).

The well planned residential areas near these work areas are Koramangala, Jayanagar, J.P.Nagar and (HAL) Hindustan Aeronautics. Newer areas like Bannerghata are also considered by those who do not need to live near the city.

The older parts of Bangalore though a bit crowded, are livable, especially if one seeks a regional cultural flavour. Kannada and Marathi speakers are found in larger numbers in Malleswaram :Tamils in Ulsoor and Shivajinagar. Thippasandra is little Kerala. Cox Town has a decided Christian flavour. The Gujarati and Marwadi communities predominate in the old business areas near the Railway station.

On the whole the modern town areas like Jayanagar, Koramangala and Indiranagar are cosmopolitan. The latest layouts are beginning to show a sprinkling of people from several countries. (because of the IT boom). Across the railway on the west is the "other side" of the tracks. Mostly white-collar and industrial workers seem to live here. Real estate, rentals The rates have fallen slightly recently. For the areas like Koramangala the rates are now in the region of Rs 4 to RS 8 per square foot. Deposits for 10 to 15 months are asked for in advance. However there are several real estate brokers and they are quite helpful.

INFRASTRUCTURE & AMENITIES

Water: Municipal water is NOT available round the clock. Usually the water is piped for 2 hours on alternate days in most areas when it is filled in tanks.

Electricity: Power cuts are common during the dry pre monsoon days. The reservoir levels are low then and hydro electric generation falls.

Cooking Gas: Public sector gas connections are difficult to get. Refills take about 15 days on an average. Private cooking gas companies like SPIC fill the gap to some extent and availability is not a problem.
