Kolkata
RESIDENTIAL
ACCOMODATION
Transit
accommodation:
There are any number of hotels in Calcutta. Some of the five star
hotels are Hotel Airport Ashok near Dum Dum airport , the Oberoi
Grand on J L Nehru Road , the Park at Park Street and The Taj
Bengal in Alipore, south Calcutta.
Several
4 star hotels like The Kenilworth and many budget hotels dot the
city. Seasoned travellers suggest The Astoria (with web service);
the Lindsay at new market.(source: rophy.demon.co.uk):
Prices:
Real estate rates are much lower than Bangalore or Mumbai. eg.
Salt lake city flats are approx. Rs 8000/- p.m. with deposits
between 50,000 to 1 lakh. Brokers are useful but not all are above
board. Best to ask local residents before signing agreements.
INFRASTRUCTURE,
SERVICES
Roads:
As mentioned elsewhere are wide but frequently congested with
traffic jams. The outer areas which are being developed are modern
and spacious.
Electricity:
The situation has improved recently and power cuts are not as
common as they used to be. Soon say the authorities the power
cuts will be forgotten.
Telephones:
New connections are difficult to obtain.
Net:
The Internet has just come to Calcutta as elsewhere in India.
There's an increase in websites about Cal but only a few really
know what they are doing. The awareness is increasing and it is
only a matter of time before Cal overtakes many other cities.
Banks: All over the city, ATMs are common. Beware however,
drafts may take some time to be processed... especially if there's
an important football match.
